Self-protection key chains for increased safety on night out
A few tips to protect yourself
1. Carry a defensive spray
To protect yourself from street perpetrators, carry pepper spray. A standard civilian can of pepper spray contains about 10% capsaicin, which is enough to cause temporary blindness, breathing difficulties, anxiety and panic. The effect usually lasts 20 minutes or more. This gives you enough time to flee the scene of the attack and contact the authorities.
2. Throw away your wallet or purse
Often, the perpetrator is purely after your money or valuables. If you are being pursued by an attacker and you think he wants your cash, remove your wallet and throw it away from you. The assailant will go for the wallet, giving you a few minutes to run in the other direction while you contact the authorities. The same story applies to your wallet - throw it away from yourself and make a mad dash in the opposite direction. It's better to lose money than to get a black eye and broken ribs while you're at it.
3. Avoid unsafe situations
Usually, common sense is your best self-defence. Don't go to an ATM at 1am If you must go out to a shop late at night, choose a shop with a well-lit car park. Also, if you have a choice, choose a larger shop that may have a security guard on hand overnight rather than a shop that has only one employee working the cash register. Many 24-hour grocery shops employ security guards and night staff.
Avoid shady neighbourhoods and dark alleys. When driving at night, take the main streets rather than side streets. Avoid parking in deserted areas at any time of the day or night. If you see police activity, avoid the area altogether.
4. Look tough
If a perpetrator is looking for someone to rob or harass, he or she will target someone who looks weak, shy or scared. Make yourself look like a victim, not a victim. Walk with good posture, make eye contact and stay alert. Keep your shoulders back and brace yourself with a little attitude. Don't be listless or droop your eyes. Do your best to look strong and confident. If given the choice, the attacker will turn to the person who doesn't look like they will fight back.
5. Put your phone away
When you are walking and texting, or have a phone in your ear, you are not in tune with the world around you. When texting or distracted by a phone conversation, you need to be careful not to bump into a pole or tree. If you allow yourself to be diverted by your phone, then you are a perfect target for an attacker. Robbers, rapists, pickpockets and thieves are watching and waiting for people who are unaware of their surroundings and playing with their phones. Stay away from your phone and stay alert.
6. Carry a protection keychains
In case of danger, stay calm and use self-defence tools to defend yourself. For example, the self defence keychain, with its loud siren, repels the opponent and then escapes at the best possible time.
